Abridged Titles

We’ve run together the names of some feature-length films, both old and recent, in which the last word of one film title is the first word of another film title. We’ve also removed any punctuation and replaced two- and three-letter articles, prepositions, and conjunctions with blanks. Finally, we’ve abbreviated each remaining word with its first letter. For example, B __ S __ L could represent “Beyond the Sea of Love,” an overlapping of the film titles Beyond the Sea and Sea of Love.

Sometimes we have run together more than two titles. For example, B __ S __ L S could represent “Beyond the Sea of Love Story,” adding Love Story to the previous example. In each puzzle, exactly one word will belong to each pair of successive titles.

The challenge is to identify the abbreviated words by figuring out the original titles. The number of titles combined in each puzzle is indicated in parentheses. Answer titles do not include any shorts, documentaries, or TV movies.

As a solving aid, a list of the short words that have been removed from all the titles appears below, in alphabetical order.

In the “Contest Answer” box, type in a list of your answers, numbered from 1 through 12. For each answer, it's enough to just type the abbreviated words; e.g., in the example B __ S __ L, the answer "Beyond Sea Love" would be acceptable. Complete all other required information, and choose Submit.

The contest deadline is April 15, 2010.
