Chain Links

The object of this contest is to complete a chain of names and titles in which one title—which both begins and ends the chain—has been provided. There are 12 missing names or titles that need to be added to complete the chain.

Each name or title may be: the title of a movie, TV movie, or TV series; a past or present celebrity, including actors and actresses, directors, sports figures, and U.S. presidents; the name of a professional sports team from the NFL, MLB, NBA, or NHL; or a well-known fictional character. A person’s nickname is acceptable if commonly used.

Each successive pair of items in your chain must be connected in one of two ways:
(1) They must share exactly one word in common, not counting any of the words “the,” ”a,” “an,” or “of”; or
(2) One must be a title, and the other must be an actor or actress who played this title role in film or on television.

Words are considered to match only if they are spelled exactly the same way; thus, “angel” does not match “angels.”

There is one other restriction: No more than two consecutive names or titles in the chain may have the same word in common. So if you have in your chain “A Man for All Seasons” followed by “The Elephant Man,” your next entry could be “Elephant Walk” but not “Man on Fire.”

Here’s an example of a partial chain linking Rich Little to Julianna Margulies:

Rich Little
Little Children
Married… with Children
Rachel Getting Married

Rachel McAdams
The Time Traveler’s Wife
The Good Wife

Julianna Margulies

Note that a title role does not need to be the name of the character, as long as the description clearly refers to, and only refers to, the character the actor or actress portrays.

Here, then, is the challenge: Make a chain of all different names and/or titles that connects the following to itself:

Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm
1.__________________________
2.__________________________
3.__________________________
4.__________________________
5.__________________________
6.__________________________
7.__________________________
8.__________________________
9.__________________________
10.__________________________
11.__________________________
12.__________________________
Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm

The items on lines 1 and 12 must connect to “Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm,” either by containing one of the words “Rebecca,” “Sunnybrook,” or “Farm,” or by naming an actress who played that role, which could be Mary Pickford, Marian Nixon, or Shirley Temple in films of 1917, 1932, and 1938. (Julia Lewis of a 1978 British TV movie would also be acceptable, but we can tell you that she is not part of our intended answer.)

The Solution

This contest turned out to have about as many different correct answers as the number of entries we received. Clearly we overestimated the difficulty of completing the chain, given all the types of connections that we allowed. Here is our intended solution, which happened to use only two-word items. None of the solutions we received (virtually all of which were valid) had much resemblance to this one; many of them began with “Animal Farm.”

Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm
1. Shirley Temple
2. Temple Grandin
3. Claire Danes
4. Claire Bloom
5. Orlando Bloom
6. Orlando Magic
7. Magic Johnson
8. Randy Johnson
9. Randy Quaid
10. Dennis Quaid
11. Pepper Dennis
12. Rebecca Romijn
