Twenty Little Words
We made a list of 20 things that belong to a specific category. Next, we altered the list by removing four or five consecutive letters from each item on the list, closing up the space between the remaining letters if necessary (that is, whenever the letters were removed from the middle of the word rather than the beginning or end). Each set of removed letters spelled, in order, a reasonably common, uncapitalized English word. All 20 removed words were different.
Solvers first had to determine what the original list's category was, then restore the list by inserting a four- or five-letter word either before, after, or within each set of letters. Next, solvers had to make a list of the removed words, keeping them in order. Finally, they had to find two removed words that rhyme; the first letters of the removed words coming between those two in the list, in order, spelled an item fitting the category of the original list. That item was the answer to the contest.
Winners were selected from many hundreds of correct entries. The removed words appear in black below; inserted in the right places, they reveal a list of national capitals (to which we’ve added the appropriate country name, for the benefit of those who may be curious). Between two rhyming removed words—BORON and MORON—the first letters of the removed words spell OTTAWA, the capital of Canada, which was the answer to the contest.
